Vail to Aspen - Date: TBA
Route and Contact Information: WEARING A HELMET IS A MUST!!!
We will depart at 8:00 am from the Dowd Jct. Forest Service lot, 3miles west of Vail. South Frontage Road to Dowd Jct: Bikes on Frontage Rd. and bike path, Cars I70 to Dowd Jct. Turn right to Minturn. Hwy. 24
Stop 1) Top of Battle Mtn.: pull off on right.
Stop 2) Ski Cooper, Tennessee Pass 10,400 ft - 10th Mtn. Memorial on left, stay on right shoulder pull off. (Bathrooms)
Stop 3) Leadville Safeway parking lot on right at the stoplight. Bikes turn right onto bike path 1 block South from Safeway at green and white Leadville sign. Return to Hwy.24 turn right stay on shoulder. Very busy traffic thru Stringtown. South and very fast and narrow to Hwy. 82. (8500 ft) Turn right. Approx.18 miles to summit.
Stop 4) Town of Twin Lakes – Brief lunch for anyone wanting it. Parking lot on left. Now climb some more. Got GU? It is UP most of the way to the top.
Stop 5) Summit Independence Pass 12,100 ft. – VERY NARROW rough decent use extreme CAUTION!!!!
FINISH: Paecke Park, Aspen, on the corner of Main and Aspen (across from Main St. Bakery), where a gourmet lunch and the return transportation to Vail await your arrival.
First Aid, radio, directions, clothing changes, food and drink are available from any SAG at a time when the vehicle can pull off safely. Spares and tools are available from the Drag vehicle.
